    This is one of my journal papers extracted from MSc thesis. The paper addressed a novel hierarchical solution for Dynamic Fault Tree based on Semi-Markov Process.

    Abstract:

    Dynamic Fault Tree (DFT) is a top down deductive technique extended to modelling complex failure behaviors and interactions of systems such as sequence and functional dependencies, priority, spare, etc. In two last decades’ different methods have been applied to reduce DFT computational complexity; each of these has an advantages and disadvantages. This paper uses the semi-Markov theorem for DFT solution with the aim of obviating the model explosion, considering non-exponential failure distribution, and hierarchical solution. In addition, in the proposed method, a universal semi-Markov process for static and dynamic gates such as AND, OR, PAND, SEQ, FDEP and SPARE is provided. The efficiency of the method is studied by a number of examples, and the results are then compared to those of the selected existing methods.

    In this paper, different number of examples are given to show the capabilities of the proposed method. For example, consider the following example of Hypothetical Cardiac Assist System (HCAS). It is a benchmark in validating different methods applied to DFT reliability solution which has also been discussed in various references.
